Of the major '60s soul stars, Wilson Pickett was an American R&B/Rock and Roll and soul singer. He was also one of the roughest and sweatiest, working up some of the decade's hottest dancefloor grooves on hits like "Land of 1000 Dances," "Mustang Sally," and "Funky Broadway".

Wilson Pickett was born on March 18, 1941 in Prattville, Alabama. Wilson was the youngest of eleven children. In his early teens, he moved to Detroit, Michigan and joined a gospel group, "The Vilionaires". He graduated to secular music and began performing with Detroit-based R&B groups in his late teens. He later joined the Falcons" and released the hit single, "You're So Fine". His biggest success with The Falcons came in 1962, when "I Found a Love," which chartered at #6 on the R&B Charts and #75 on the Pop Charts. Wilson began to contribute many original songs to the Falcons, who achieved some recording success in the rhythm and blues field. He released several solo singles on small Detroit labels. He released his hit single, "Land of 1000 Dances" which landed at #3 on the R&B Charts and #6 on the Pop Charts. His other hits include, "Mustang Sally" which peaked at #6 on the R&B Charts and #23 on the Pop Charts, "Funky Broadway" chartered #6 on the Pop Chart. Towards the end of 1967, he released more singles like, "I'm in Love", "Jealous Love", and "I Found A True Love".
In 1969, he released the singles, ""You Keep Me Hangin' On" which landed at #16 on the R&B Charts, "Sugar Sugar" which peaked #4 on the R&B Charts and "She Said Yes". During the 90's Pickett found life a struggle and was arrested and charged with various drink and drug offences. He returned in 1999, however, with his first new studio album in 12 years, the Grammy-nominated It's Harder Now. Pickett died of a heart attack at a hospital in Virginia in January 2006.
