Welcome to the Cruel World is the debut record of Ben Harper from Virgin Records. This album established Harper as a popular folk musician in his era.

Released on February 8, 1994, this album was Ben Harper's first with Virgin Records. The album was Harper's claim-to-fame album where it established him as a folk musician known worldwide. Also, in this album laid a strong foundation to a strong sophomore effort in Fight for Your Mind where it showed obvious growth in his musical experimentation and individual declamation.


The album tracks has a mixed of political conviction rarely heard and tenderness which demonstrates Harper's emotional range. The tracks end with "And Still I Rise", that has built around Maya Angelou's 1979 poem.
