[edit] About
Vanessa Lynn Williams was born March 18 1963, in the upstate New York town of Millwood to parents who were both music teachers. She loved performing musical theater as a teenager, and won a scholarship to study it at Syracuse University in 1981. In the meantime, she began entering beauty pageants, with considerable success in 1983, she represented New York in the Miss America pageant and became the first African-American woman ever to be crowned the winner. Unfortunately, her triumph was short-lived. Vanessa Williams was doing backup vocals on George Clinton's. Although the songs weren't to widely known, she caught the attention of Wing and Murcury Record executives. After a couple of meetings, they signed Vanessa to a recording contract. While working up a storm on her debut album, she married and later divorced her now ex manager Ramn Hervey. By 1988 her debut album The Right Stuff was released. It won her a new image. People were starting to appreciate her more. And as luck would have it, her single 'Dreaming' hit #1 on the charts. It was a good year for her and she was back on top. On the big screen, she finally got a major role opposite Arnold Schwarznegger in the action, suspense movie Eraser. This opened up a new area of acting for her.
