"Add Intro here."
Vanessa Van Spall draws on the best of rock, blues, gospel and pop traditions to create an instantly refreshing and energized listening experience with a sound that is decidedly different from many of today's artists. With lyrics that provide heartfelt, bittersweet and piercingly incisive reflections on the ups and downs in life, Vanessa comments that, "People see a piece of my soul during a performance..."
Major influences include Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Shakira, Bonnie Raitt, Mahalia Jackson, Suzanne Vega and Aimee Mann. Vocals soar over danceable grooves, driving keyboards and catchy viola riffs, fusing elements of Motown and late-era Beatles with the vocal styles of Annie Lennox, Sarah Mclachlan and Sheryl Crow.

About
Add bio here. Somewhere between getting her drivers license and finishing college, her detour began. Afraid of failure or success or who-knows-what, she started on an alternate path of seemingly sensible choices, like getting married, finishing a degree in History, working office and corporate jobs, substitute teaching (not easy), etc. All the while, slowly coming to the realization that she wouldn’t find the fulfillment she was looking for in anything other than music.
So the musical silence ended. Numerous steps in the right direction, as well as the partnership of Ian Hisert, have led her to completion of her new full-length album, “Cotton-Poly Blend”! Songs are written together by Ian and Vanessa. The album is recorded with star drummer and producer, Atma Anur, and she is pleased to have her long-standing viola player, Eric Golub, and bass player, Derek Yergler, featured on the album.
Lyrics provide heartfelt, bittersweet and piercingly incisive reflections on the ups and downs in life. She promises that people will hear a piece of her soul through the music. “Maybe I never should have run from my dreams, but my songs reflect a broader life experience than I had starting out at 16. I hope people can relate to that and appreciate it. This music is for anyone who’s ever made mistakes, been afraid or just taken the long way to get there.”

IAN HISERT - COWRITER, KEYBOARDS AND PIANO
Ian's parents raised him listening to the Beatles pretty much since the day he was born. In his teens he decided to rebel and submerged himself in 80’s synth-pop. It was during this time when Ian started to write music in his first garage band, The Regime. (Technically a “basement band,” consisting of 4 keyboardists who all wanted to be Howard Jones plus a drummer). Ian’s experience in The Regime opened the world of rock music to him, and after being bitten by the performing bug, he has never looked back.
As Ian began to explore more music, he was introduced to both the blues and classic rock. He spent much time learning to play pieces by Chick Corea and George Gershwin while listening to such 70’s super groups as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. This sent him on a musical journey that led him to rediscover the Beatles and re-embrace the music he grew up with. As Ian continued to write music, he brought together the disparate elements of all the music he was listening to, creating a unique sound and style. In the music he writes with Vanessa Van Spall, you can hear the dominant influences of the Beatles, the blues and 80’s pop.
ERIC GOLUB - VIOLA, CELLO Eric usurps the role of lead guitarist on viola. L.A. Jazz Scene describes Eric as plating "adventurous music...where he displays an appealing sound, impressive technique and an open-minded style."
DEREK YERGLER - BASS
Derek lays down tasty grooves and helps guide the emotional feel of the music.
ATMA ANUR - PRODUCTION, DRUMS AND PERCUSSION
Brilliant producer and studio drummer for "Cotton-Poly Blend". He has played with Journey, Tony MacAlpine, David Bowie, Third Eye Blind, Richie Kotzen, to name a few. Vanessa had met and worked with Atma as a teenager. After many years where the two had followed different paths, they re-united to work on Vanessa's debut album.
