[edit] About
Born as Vanessa Lee Carlton on August 16, 1980 to Ed and Heidi Carlton. Her dad was a pilot (plays fiddle on the side) and her mom was a pianist and a teacher. When Vanessa Carlton was 2 years old she was already enrolled into a Montessori school. The main focus of her childhood was music and art which will be evident as she grows up and be an artist.
Showing her first sign in music, after returning to Disneyland, as she figured out how to play It's a Small World on the piano, her mom became her first music teacher. Since then her mom began exposing her to a vriety of classical composers, from Eric Satie, to Mozart, to Debussey. At the age of 8, she wrote her first piece of music, not lyrics or anything but a piano song.
At 9, she became obsessed with ballet but still continued to learn the piano. At 13, she started travelling to New York to study with some of the great ballet dancers and teacher such as Grelsey Kirkland and Madame Nenette Charisse. At age 14, she was accepted to study at the School of American Ballet in New York City. She left her family and moved into a dorm at Lincoln Center and enrolled in the Professional Children's School for high school and began her new life.
At 17, feeling broken and isolated, she started writing songs again because she failed to be a professional ballet dancer. The failure she encountered in her ballet made her skip her ballet classes and just play the dilapidated piano in the kitchen of her dorm. It's also this piano that gave her solace for all the things that she went through. Through the times that she skipped her ballet classes, she not only played piano but also write music not the same piano pieces that she used to write, this time she's actually writing lyrics. She never imagined herself being a singer until she sang her own lyrics. By combining her piano skills, her lyrics, and her singing talent together At this time a new singer/songwriter was born
The fall after she graduated she got an apartment with a friend and became a waitress and started playing gigs downton. With all the gigs and hardwork at hand she signed with Interscope, Geffren, A&M Records a year later.
She released her debut single while still recording and finishing her debut album. Her debut single A Thousand Miles hit the charts and when the debut album Be Not Nobody was released two more singles were released, Ordinary Day and Pretty Baby. Although the last two singles were not as successful as her debut single, it still climbed the charts.
2 years after releasing her debut album, she released her second album entitled Harmonium. In 2007 she'll be releasing her 3rd album and said that most people might think it as her 2nd album due to a perceived lack of commitment to Harmonium.
