About
Uncle Tupelo was formed in Belleville, Illinois by high school friends, "Jay Farrar", "Jeff Tweedy", and "Mike Heidorn" formed the band after the lead singer of their previous band, The Primitives, left to attend college. From the start, they blended rock dynamics with string-band textures, scorching electric guitars with whining pedal steels, and Appalachian-style ballads with blasts of feedback. The trio recorded three albums for Rockville Records, before signing with Sire Records and expanding to a five-piece. Their first album, No Depression became a byword for the genre and was widely influential. It features the singles, "Screen Door", and "Whisky Bottle". Uncle Tupelo split on May 1, 1994, after completing a farewell tour. Following the breakup, Jay built a new group named as "Son Volt" with Mik. The remaining members continued as Wilco.
One of the first bands of the 1990s to blend elements of country and gospel music with rock, Uncle Tupelo has been praised for combining the rawness of traditional American music with the post-punk rock of such 1980s bands as The Replacements, The Minutemen, and Hüsker Dü.
