About

Released on June 30, 1986, True Blue was Madonna's third studio album; it is also the first album on which to credit her for writing or co-writing and co-producing every song. The album also saw Madonna to continue her collaboration with ex-boyfriend Stephen Bray ("Into the Groove"), while also marking the beginning of her collaborations with Patrick Leonard, with whom Madonna would go on to write and produce such notable songs as "Like a Prayer" and "Frozen".

While some music critics failed to be impressed by the album's ending, most critics did praise Madonna's strengthened vocals. Many also considered the album to be her first "classic" after her previous, less serious efforts of Madonna and Like a Virgin. Some, such as Davitt Sigerson in a Rolling Stone review, remarked on a lack of oustanding songs, such as "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl" had been to her previous album, but nonetheless deemed the album a "sturdy, dependable, lovable new album".

Trivia

  • Madonna dedicated this album to her then-husband, American actor Sean Penn, "the coolest guy in the universe", to whom she had been married for less than a month. The phrase "true blue" was a favorite phrase of Penn's, and Madonna decided use the phrase to title her album. The album's title track was also written about Penn, and track four, "Live to Tell", was the theme song to At Close Range, in which Penn starred.
