About
After Moderate success off their eponymous first album, System of a Down was catapulted straight to the top of the American and Canadian charts with their follow up effort entitled Toxicity.
Unlike the first album, Toxicity was not only falsely accused of being political "only for show," it was also branded as Anti-Christ. During the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the first hit single "Chop Suey!" was abruptly dropped from the airwaves because of lyrics such as "Trust in my self righteous suicide," "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit," and "Why have you forsaken me."
The issue was finally cleared when it was revealed that the song title is actually taken from a poem written by Father Armeni, a figure widely respected among the Greeks. Father Armeni also was quoted as saying "why have you forsaken me in your eyes" and "self righteous suicide has taken place," in reference to the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Quite pertinently, all four members of band are of Armenian bloodlines and grandsons of genocide survivors.
After experiencing "bad" publicity, instead of fading away from the music scene, the album incredibly shot to #1 in the US charts. Toxicity continued to enjoy constant airplay with other hits like Toxicity and Aerials.
