[edit] About

Pete Townshend and John Entwistle met while studying at the same high school in London. They played in the band Dixieland with John plating the trumpet while Pete plays banjo.

In the early 60's, Pete and John had formed a rock and roll band. In 1962, John left the band to join another band called Detours, a hard-edged rock band featuring Roger Daltrey. In the later part of 1962, Pete joins the Detours.

In 1963, Roger became the lead vocalist of Detour when Colin Dawson left the band. After a year, Doug Sandom left the group and he was replaced by Keith Moon. They changed their name to The High Numbers, which later became The Who.

In 1964, they signed a recording contract under Decca Records. Their first album, I Can't Explain was released in January 1965. After that, they had released their more follow up albums.

After the released of their album Quadrophenia, the group takes a break. The Who returned in 1975. In 1978, Keith died due to a drug overdose. They replaced him with Kenny Jones.

In 1979, when 11 attendees of their concert were trampled to death, the group decided to take their break again. Pete, John and Roger concentrate in their solo careers.

In 1981, The Who got back to record another album Face Dances and it was big hit. In 1982, they announced in one of their concert tour that it would be their farewell tour.

In 1985, they are reunited to play Live Aid. In 1989, Jones was replaced by Simon Philips for a 25th anniversary tour in America. In 1994, they reunited again to celebrate Roger's 50th birthday.

In October 2002, The Who held a concert for the benefit of the families of the NYC victims of the September 11 attacks.

In 2002, they were about to held their North American tour but on the night before their 1st show, John Enthwistle died from a cocaine induced heart attack. They replaced him with Pino Palladino
