About

The Waterboys were formed in 1983 by "Mike Scott". Mike was born on December 14, 1958 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He became involved in music when he created the fanzine "Jungleland" and later played in a series of local punk outfits. He joined a band called, "Another Pretty Face". The group moved to London. After the break up Mike formed a new band named, The Waterboys. A newspaper advertisement calling for a musician led to a response from "Anthony Thistlethwaite" and "Kevin Wilkinson" on drum.

In 1983, they released their self-titled debut album. The band added "Karl Wallinger" on keyboard and "Roddy Lorimer" on trumpet in 1984 to complete the line up. Their second album, A Pagan Place was released in June 1984 and issued the single, "The Big Music".

In their next album, This is The Sea which was released in 1985 earned the band a significant hit with the single, "The Whole of The Moon" which chartered #3 at the IK Singles Chart and won the Ivor Novello Award. After the released of the album, Karl left the band to form a new band named, World Party. In 1988, the band released another album, Fishermans's Blues, which was the group's best selling album, reaching #13 on the UK Albums Chart. In that same year, they added "Steve Wickham", "Dave Ruffy", "Guy Charmbers" and "Marco Weissman" in the group.

In 1990, they released their next album, Roam To Roam. Trevor and Anthony left the band in 1991. Their next album, Dream Harder was issued in 1993. After ten years of recording and touring, they dissolved in 1993 and Mike pursued a solo career.

Mike reformed the group and released their new album, A Rock in The Weary Land in 2000 with a new set of members. The album was praised by critics. In 2003, they released their next album, Universal Hall. Their next album, Karma To Burn was released in 2005. Their latest album, Book of Lightning was released last April 2, 2007.

Trivia

  • The Waterboys, was named after a line in the Lou Reed song "The Kids" but wholly appropriate given Scott's recurring lyrical fascination with sea imagery.
