[edit] About

Officially, The Used was formed in January 2001 after a long process of recruiting and experimenting with their music. After a few members came and went, the group finally met Bert McCracken, whom they recruited as their vocalist. This line-up was made up of Bert McCracken, Jeph Howard, Quinn Allman, and Branden Steineckert.

Once known as Something To Burn during the late 90's, the group was able to release a few copies of their self-titled album before they first encountered their publicity opening for a band named Froglick. In an early interview with the band's vocalist, Bert admitted that Creed was the band's first choice, while Used was their second vote. However, since both names have already been taken by Brian Marshall's former (and now-defunct) band and a Boston band, respectively, the band decided to name themselves The Used.

The band soon released another self-titled, debut album (this time as The Used) in 2002, with three tracks making the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks in Billboard magazine.

In September 2006, however, the band suffered from a setback as Bert McCracken, Jeph Howard, and Quinn Allman finally confirmed rumors that Branden Steineckert has left the band. Quoting from the band's website, "It is with much sadness that we want to tell you that Branden is no longer the drummer in The Used. We felt that we needed to move forward without Branden as our drummer. We wish Branden well, and owe a great deal of gratitude towards him for his hard work over the years. We could not have gotten this far without him. We all wish much happiness and success in Branden's future endeavors - wherever they may lead."

The following month, Dan Whitesides was named the new drummer of the band. Meanwhile, Branden has become part of the lineup of Rancid, replacing drummer Brett Reed.
