[edit] About
The Strokes was formed on 1999 with lead singer-songwriter Julian Casablancas, guitarist Nick Valensi, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti as the earliest members. The trio began playing while attending Manhattan Dwight School. They played under the name of Half Pipe for shows. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture later joined the group as he had been friends with Julian for quite some time.
The short-lived Half-Pipe discontinued when Casablancas was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland as he developed drinking problems and was doing poorly in his school in New York. While in Switzerland, he met guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. Years later, Hammond went to New York to attend school and the group was again reunited and began sharing a dormitory together. At this point they officially decided to name their group "The Strokes".
The group worked very hard in keeping their day jobs and started rehearsing at nights to form a track list of ten songs. These tracks were used to play for auditions and demos. In 2001,"The Strokes" found themselves releasinh their first debut album Is This It under RCA Records.
