About

Alternative rock band, The Stone Roses, started in 1984. It all began when Ian Brown (vocals) and John Squire (guitar) went to thesame school. The following year, they added Andy Couzens (guitar), Reni (drums) and Peter Garner (bass). The band started playing gigs all around Manchester. In 1987, Couzen departed from the group followed by Garner who was being replaced by Mani. The new line-up recorded their very first single, "So Young" under Thin Line Records. The debut single was followed by "Sally Cinnamon". In 1988, The Stone Roses signed in with Silverstone Records and released "Elephant Stone". The following year, the band had sold-out concerts both in Manchester and London. Later that year, they released their self-titled debut album. It included the single, "She Bangs the Drums", which entered the Top 40 hit chart followed by "Fool's Gold" entering the Top 10 hits. In 1990, the earlier singles of the group went in the charts. "One Love" peaked at #4. The Stone Roses played from warehouse gigs to stadiums filling up over 30,000 people. The band had conflicts with Silverstone Records. The label prevented them from releasing anything new. The battle lasted over two years while they were in court the band was already preparing their follow-up album, Second Coming. The Stone Roses won and signed in with Geffen Records.

Second Coming was finally released in 1994 with the single "Love Spreads". It peaked it at #2 on the chats. The album got great reviews and stayed at the Top 10 for weeks. In 1995, they were planning to go on a world wide tour to promote their album but Reni left the band. Robbie Maddix replaced him but The Stone Roses only toured in the U.S. due to John Squire's bike accident that left his collar bone broken. While waiting for Squire to get back on his feet, their popularity slowly faded. In 1996, Squire announced of his leaving the band to start his own. In October later that year, the group decided to end The Stone Roses. In 1997, Squire's new band, Seahorses, released their debut. Brown went on a solo career.

Reviews

The Stone Roses has rhythmic sensibility. They are a great fusion of acid house culture and rock & roll. They have lyrics written in a classic psychedelic tradition. -Mimi 08:15, 27 April 2008 (PST)
