One of the famous bands in the 80's, The Smiths was an English rock group active from 1982 to 1987. The band released four studio albums including their most memorable one The Queen is Dead which became their most greatest album ever made. The also released several compilations in fewer than five years, as well as numerous singles.

The Smiths was formed in 1982, by Johnny Marr who was born on October 31, 1963 and became a former member of variety of Manchester-based rock and roll band such as Sister Ray, Freaky Part, White Dice and Paris Valentinos. Other member includes, Steven Morrisey who was born on May 22, 1959. They recruited Andy Rourke as bassist and Mike Joyce as their drummer. After a short audition, Dale Hibbert worked as their sound engineer. However, after two performances, Andy Rourke replaced Dale. Andy was also a former member of Paris Valentinos.

In 1983, they signed a recording contract under an indie label Rough Trade Records. They released their first single, Hand In Glove but failed to reach the chart. Next singles, This Charming Man and What Difference It Make was a minor hit. In 1984, they released their self-titled debut album who debuted at number two in the UK Chart.

In 1984, they released more singles including, William, It Was Really Nothing. In 1985, they released their second album, Meat is Murder. The album reached number one in the UK charts. Their next album, Shakespeare's Sister was not a great success. In 1986, they released, The Queen is Dead and became their Greatest Albums Ever Made.

In 1987, Johnny left the group because of personal differences with other members. Later that year, they released their album, Strangeways, Here We Came. The album reached number two in the UK Charts but it was only a minor hit in the United States. After the released of the album, Steven disbanded the group and began a solo career.
