[edit] About

The Libertines was formed by the partnership of Pete Doherty on vocals and Carl Barat on lead guitar. They recruited John Hassall on bass and Gary Powell on drums. In 1997, Carl and Pete were both staying at the apartment of Pete's sister; Carl had a band called the Roosters and Pete idolized him. Initially Carl did not like Pete, but after a while they formed an intense relationship fuelled by a love of music, poetry, and British culture. The two moved to Camden Road. They formed a band with Steve Bedlow, a neighbor of theirs. The band was called, The Strand. After a while, they changed their name to The Libertines. Then they recruited John and Gary through Steve.

In 2000, John left the band. In 2001, The Libertines signed a recording contract for six months under Rough Trade Records. John rejoined the band. In 2003, they released their debut album, Up The Bracket. Their single from the album reached number 29 on the Billboard Charts. During the recording of their first album, Pete became a drug addict and his relationship with the band deteriorated. During their concert tours and recording sessions, there was increasing tension among the members especially between Pete and Carl.

After the release of their single, Don't Look Back Into The Sun which reached number 11 in the billboard charts. In September, 2003, Pete was sentenced to 6 months in prison for breaking into Carl's flat but it was reduced to two months on appeal. After two months, when Pete was about to released from prison, Carl was waiting for Pete outside the prison. After an emotional reunion, they performed at The Tap 'n' Tin pub with John and Gary. This is where the cover shot for the "The Libertines", (their second album) was taken, on the 8th of October, 2003. In mid- 2003, the band went on tour.

In 2004, their manager, Banny Pootschi resigned and was replaced by Alan McGee. When Mick Jones returned to produce of their second album, Pete's drug addiction had become intolerable.

After the release of their single, For Lover A Song, Pete never returned to their studios

During his absence from the band, Pete went to rehab to kick his various addictions at a monastery in Thailand, but he only lasted three days. After he ecsaped he headed to Bangkok to look for drugs, he was able to obtain heroin from his hotel bellboy on credit. The rest of the band members continued their performance.

In June 2004, Pete was again arrested for carrying an offensive weapon. He was sentenced to four months in prison but the sentence was suspended for 12 months. Pete was not been able to perform with the band unless he was clean. However, Pete formed a new band, Babyshambles. In 2005, The Libertines performed their last show in Paris. Carl decided to dissolve the band. Carl has formed his own band too called, [[Dirty Pretty Things] this band consists of all the previous members of the Libertines, except Pete.
