About
The Kinks was formed in 1964 at London, England. Originally composed of Ray Davies, on lead singer and guitarist; Dave Davies on guitar; Mick Avory on drums and Peter Quiafe on bass.
Ray Davies and Dave Davies were brothers and born in Muswell Hill, North London. Ray was born on June 21, 1944 while Dave was born on February 3, 1947. Peter Quiafe who was born on December 31, 1947 in Tavistoc, Devon was the schoolmate of Ray. The four formed a band in 1963 which they called The Ravens. They recruited Mickey Willet on drums. Their demo tapes went to the hands of Shel Talmy, who helped them to contact Pye Records in 1964.
In that same year, they changed their named to The Kinks. Before they signed a recording contract with Pye, Mickey left the band and was replaced by Mick Avory who was born on February 15, 1944. Their first single Long Tall Sally was not a big hit. Pye Records told them that if their two other singles will not be success; they will be dropped out from their recording company.
Their third single You Really Got Me went numner 1 in the UK charts and made into the top 10 US Charts. Their other hit single in 1964 was All Day and All of The Night became number 2 in UK and number 7 in US. The band had released several albums including compilation and live albums.
