The Impressions were formed in 1958 at Chicago by, " Sam Gooden", "Richard Brooks", and "Arthur Brooks". The three were former members of The Roosters. They left the other member, "Fred Cash" and went to Chicago. After they formed a new band, they recruited "Jerry Butler" and "Curtis Mayfield". They were called Jerry Butler and The Impressions.


The band released their first single, "For Your Precious Love" in 1958 which chartered at #3 on the R&B Charts. After the released, Jerry signed an exclusive contract with the group's Vee-Jay label as a solo act. He decided to leave the group. Curtis became the lead singer of the band. Fred joined them after he left Chattanooga.


Curtis and Jerry reunited in the classic single, "He Will Break Your Heart" in 1960. Curtis has a toured with Jerry and his new band and occasionally playing with The Impressions. The band released another single, "Gypsy Woman" which reached #2 on the R&B Charts. Over the next nine years, Curtis Impressions would chart almost 30 singles.


In 1962, Brooks Brother left the band. The group released their next single, "It's All Right" in 1963 and chartered at #1 on the R&B Charts. In 1964, the next single, "I'm So Proud" was released. The next singles, "We're A Winner" was released in 1967 which chartered at #1 on the US R&B Charts, "This is My Country", and the #1 R&B hit single single, "Choice of Colors" in 1969 and "Check Out Your Mind" in 1970.


Curtis left the group in 1970 to pursue his solo career. He was replaced by, "Leroy Hutson" but left the group in 1973. He was replaced by, "Ralph Johnson" and "Reggie Torian ". The band released their next #1 hit single, "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm a Changed Man)" and the #3 hit single, "Same Thing it Took" in 1976. In that year, Ralph left the band and replaced by "Nate Evans" who stayed in the group for three years.


They released more hit albums and singles. Nate left the band in 1979, reducing the group to a trio. They released their final album, Fan The Flames in 1981. After two years, they disbanded.
