About
The Four Tops were formed by, "Levi Stubbs" and "Abdul Fakir" with "Reynaldo Benson" and "Lawrence Payton". Levi and Abdul went to Pershing. They met Reynaldo and Lawrence at a friend's birthday party. The four sang together and with their immediate chemistry, they decided to form a band called "Four Aims". Lawrence cousin helped them to audition with Chess Records, immediately signed the four to a recording contract, and eventually changed their name to The Four Tops.
In 1964, they released their first single, "Baby I Need Your Loving" which chartered at #11 on the US Billboard Pop Charts. The next single released was "Without the One You Love (Life's Not Worth While)" but failed to make the chart. Their next single, "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", became a huge success, it chartered at #1 on the US Billboard Charts. These are all included in the self-titled debut album of the band.
In 1965, they produced more hit singles among them are, ""It's the Same Old Song", "Something About You", "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)", and "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever". Their biggest hit and one of the most popular Motown Songs ever, "Reach Out I'll Be There" was released in 1966 and chartered at #1 on the US Singles Chart. It is followed by the single, "Standing in The Shadows of Love".
The band has produced numerous singles and albums which includes, On Broadway in 1967, Catfish and Indestructible among others. In 1997, Lawrence Payton passed away due to cancer of the liver, which proved to be the only thing that could break up the Four Tops. After some consideration, the remaining members hired Theo Peoples to take Lawrence place.
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked them #79 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. As of 2006, Abdul and Theo Peoples still perform together as the Four Tops. They are currently on tour as of now.
