Suzanne Vega is an American songwriter and singer who rose to fame via her album, Solitude Standing.

Suzanne Vega was born on July 11, 1959 at Santa Monica, California to Pat Vega who work as a computer systems analyst of German-Swedish extraction and to Richard Peck who works in graphics. When Suzanne was two years old, her parents was divorced. Her mother remarried to Puerto Rican novelist Ed Vega. After the wedding, they moved to Manhattan, New York City. At the age of nine, she begins to write poems. She composed her first song at the age of 14.
Suzanne studied in Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts. She took up English Literature at Columbia University's Barnard College. While attending college, she begin to performed at coffeehouses and folk festivals and Greenwich Village. She was also a regular contributor to the Monday night songwriters group at Cornelia Street Cafe. She graduated college in 1982 and took up several jobs. In 1983, she signed a recording contract under A&M Records.
In 1985, Suzanne released her self-titled debut album. The album was a genuine hit in Britain, where it went platinum. Her next album, Solitude Standing was one of her best albums who receive good reviews from music critics. The album debuted at number two in U.K Charts and went gold within three months. In 1990, she released her third album, Days of Open Hand which signified her change in style of music.
In 1992, she released an album, 99.9F°, which is a mixtures of folk music and dance beats. In 1996, she released her fifth album, Nine Objects of Desire. It features the single, Caramel which appeared in the soundtrack of the movie The Truth About Cats and Dogs. In 2001, the album Songs in Red and Gray was released. In 2003, her first compilation album was released. In 2006, she signed a recording contract with Blue Note Records. She also became the first major recording artist to perform live in the online game, Second Life. Her new album is due to be released this year.
