About
Sugar Ray was formed in Orange County in the heavily suburban area south of Los Angeles on 1992. It started out when the three early members of the group; Rodney Sheppard, Murphy Karges, and Stan Frazier had been playing in parties together with the defunct band named Shrinky Dinx since the late 80's. And soon, a friend, Mark McGrath joined in and became the lead singer of the group after jumping in one night to perform at a local show. Soon, they began to collaborate on their own original material and played around Los Angeles and San Diego Area and got one of its friend to finance their planned music video. The video, impressive enough immediately got the attention of Atlantic in 1994 where they signed a deal. And due to threat for legal actions by Milton Bradley who owned the rights to the original Shrinky dinks toy, this time they change their name to Sugar Ray. Another friend soon came in the name of Craig Bullock, aka DJ Homicide.
In the summber of 1995, it released their debut album Lemonade and Brownies where it is dominated aggressively by funk metal, with touches of punk and rock which eventually they became known for.
