About

Steve Winwood or "Stephen Lawrence Winwood" was born on May 12, 1948 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England to "Lawrence Samuel", a foundry worker and "Lillian Mary". Steve is one of a family of amateur musicians. By the time he was six, Steve was playing the piano. Steve was introduced to the world of rock'n'roll by his uncle, before kicking off his career with the The Muff Woody Jazz Band at the age of eight. Sooner, he also practiced to play drums. Steve was a part of the Birmingham rhythm and blues scene, he plays the Hammond B-3 Organ and guitar when he was still elementary.

At fifteen he dropped out of school permanently to join his older brother in a rock band, the "Spencer Davis Group". He co-wrote and recorded their singles, ""Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm A Man". He left the group in 1967 and formed a new band called, Traffic with, "Chris Wood", "Dave Mason" and "Jim Capaldi". They released an album, Mr. Fantasy which features the hit songs, "Paper Sun" and "Hole in My Shoe". In 1970, he left the band and formed a new band Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, "Ginger Baker" and "Rich Gretch". Eric left the band after their tour ended. The remaining three members formed a a new band called, Ginger Baker's Air Force with "Denny Laine". But this supergroup turned out to be just another short-lived project.

Steve went solo in 1974 and recorded his solo album, Mad Shadows. However, he went back to Traffic and released an album with them. Due to differences, the band disbanded in 1977. Steve released his debut album in that same year. His next and hit album, Arc of A Driver was released in 1980 which features the hit single, "While You See a Chance" which chartered #2 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Chart and #7 in U.S. Hot 100. It spawned the hit singles, "Higher Love" which chartered #1 in both U.S. Mainstream Rocj Charts and U.S. Hot 100.

After several hit albums from Island Records, he moved to Virgin Records and released the album, Roll With It. The album features the single with same title and landed at #1 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock Charts and U.S. Hot 100. His next album, Junction Seven was released in 1997.
