[edit] About
The band started performing and working in men's clubs back in 1992, previously known as Tragic Love Company. Later the band changed their name to Stereophonics' after former drummer Stuart Cable's grandmother's gramophone.
After small gigs and events, the band was finally signed on to Richard Branson's new Virgin Records label V2. Their Britpop and 70's rock and roll influences made the band diffrerent and added a fresh sound to the music scene. They were the first ever band to be signed under Branson's new label.
Their debut album, Word Gets Around ranked #14 in the charts and went Gold in a matter of months in 1998. By February, the band received a Brit Award for Best New Group. Making Stereophonics a rising star. Later that year, they toured to Europe, Australia and the USA. All performances were successful.
Following the release of their debut album, they released their sophomore record entitled, Performance And Cocktails in 1999. The single, Just Looking ranked #4 on hit charts. The second single, The Bartender And The Thief was successful as well. The album reached #1 status within weeks of its release, going Platinum. later that year the band performed at what was widely regarded as the best gig of the year. The Morfa Stadium in Swamsea was the venue and they played in front of 50,000 people.
Sterephonics was in hiatus in 2000 and did not make headlines untill their 2001 release entitled, Just Enough To Perform. This is their third album and they instantly played back-to-back dates in Donington Park alongside Ash, Black Crowes, and Proud Mary that summer.
By 2003 they released their fourth effort, You Gotta Go There TO Come Back. Again, the band did another sold out tour in the UK, ending with a Christmas show at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. Together with bands, Feeder and Ocean Color Scene. Their song, High At The Ceiling was even featured in a 2005 commercial for a Nissan SUV. After a hectic year, the band took a well-deserved break after culminating their show at the Manchester Move Festival in 2003-2004.
Their latest album, Language, Sex, Violence. Other? was released in March 2005 and entered their new drummer, Javier Wyler. After Stuart Cable was fired from the band due to commitment issues. The album went straight to #1 in the UK singles chart with their first single,
Dakota. Their second single, Superman was also an enjoyable song although not as successful as the latter peaking only at #13. The third single taken from the album, Devil reached #11 in the charts and it featured a controversial video. But this did not make the band get any slower. They performed at their biggest audience yet at the 2005 Live8 concert in Hyde Park, London. The band in currently working on ther next album. No definite word yet on when it's going to be released.
