About
Born as Stephen Patrick David Gately on March 17, 1976 in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, and the second youngest of five children. He was once a part of the successful band Boyzone until 2000. He now has a solo career and acting roles.
In June 1999, after learning that someone was trying to sell a story that he was gay, he decided to publicly tell his fans that he is gay. It was a brave move for a him who has thousands of fans, mainly girls, and is part of one of the most and popular boy bands during the time. Although his band was a total success giving him fame and fortune, he did not change, he is true to himself and he admits freely that at the time of his coming out he was a bit nervous about the reation he would get.
When the band decided to move on to solo projects, he was the first with his debut single title New Beginning and later a debut solo album also entitled New Beginning.
In 2002 he came back with a bang - playing the lead role in Bill Kenwright's new production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which previewed in Oxford in December 2002. In 2003, he received fantastic reviews for Jospeh but on September 2003 he decided to leave hois role and find or search for new pastures. In 2004 he took quite a different role where he became quite unrecognizable after being transformed into the evil Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He was part of the show until March 2005.
He has recently become a vice patron of National Missing Persons Helpline and is pleased to be supportin the Runaway Helpline which provides an essential service for vulnerable people in their time of need.
In April 2006 he took on another role in his musical theather career as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.
Although he is not very active in the music industry (albums/singles), he has now truly proved himself that he belongs to the performing.
