Softcell was one of a new wave of British groups like Culture Club, Depeche Mode, and Human League that created their pop hits with electronic synthesizers. They rose to fame via their hit single, "Tainted Love".

About
Softcell was formed in 1980 by "Marc Almond" and "David Ball". Marc and Dave both grew up in seaside towns. They are both students of the Leeds Polytechnic Fine Arts University and eventually met their and formed the Softcell. They released their first EP, Mutant Moments in 1980. They released their first hit single, "Memorabilia" in 1981 under Bizzare Records.
Their debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was released in 1981. It features the hit single, "Tainted Love" which was a number-one hit in seventeen countries. It also set a Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive stay on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It stayed 43 weeks on the chart. Other singles on that album are, "Torch" and "What". Their next album, Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing was released in 1982. In 1983, they released their next album, Art of Falling Apart which is a hit. After the released of their album, Last Night in Sodom in 1984, they decided to split apart due to personal differences. The two did other solo projects before they did a reunion album, Cruelty Without Beauty in 2002. Their next album is due to be released this coming December 2007.
