[edit] About
Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. was born on October 20, 1971, in Long Beach, California. He is professionally known as Snoop Dogg, an American rapper, producer, and actor. Once, his mother nicknamed him "Snoopy" as a child because he is fond of watching Charlie Brown cartoons, he then took with him the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg when he began recording. Until on 1996, he changed his stage name to just simply Snoop Dogg when he left his original label Death Row to sign a contract deal with No Limit Records.
While attending high school at Long Beach Polytechnic School, he was involved of a lot of troubles by being in and out of prison after being convicted with coccaine trafficking. This resulted into his initial exposure to public life. Snoop was a member of a local Crips gang in Long Beach, the Rollin' 20 Crips whose older members had a long history of recognizing talent particularly in the field of music and sports. With this, Snoop was pushed to make something of himself as a rapper instead of being a hustler. He then went home to follow some homemade rap tapes he made with his cousin Nat Dogg and bestfriend Warren G.
His success began when he signed a record deal with Death Row after and soon released Doggystyle in 1993. The album became the first debut album ever to enter the charts at #1. Two singles of the album reached the top ten most-played songs in the United States. The album then was considered Snoop's finest album and was often given the same praise to that of Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food.
