About

Since 1959, no other UK female artist has two top 10 singles on the UK singles charts at the same time. Sheena Easton, is a Scottish singer who dominated the charts in the 80’s.

Born to a steel mill laborer on April 27, 1959 and the youngest of six children, this Scottish girl is two-time Grammy Award winner and theater & TV actress.

Her father died when she was barely six years old so her mother had to work as a laborer to support the family. Despite this, her mother still attended to all their needs.

Her determination to take on singing as a career was fuelled by the stunning rendition by Barbra Streisand of a song for the opening credits of the movie The Way We Were. This experience deeply moved her and gave her the willpower to become a singer. In 1975, her intelligence gave her the chance to get a scholarship to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. She studied speech and drama teaching until 1979. She knew that it would bring out the best in her craft as singer. During her scholarship, she sang with a band called Something Else by night at local clubs.

Modern Girl was her first single and was released in the UK. However, this was not favorably received by the public and ended up to No. 56. Her second single, 9 To 5 made it a phenomenal record to no. 3 of the UK singles chart in 1980, also pulling up with it Modern Girl which then also made it to the top 10 making two of her songs in the top 10 at the same time.

These events led to the inevitable popularity of Sheena.

Sheena entered the US market with her renamed 9 To 5 first US- and Canada-released single, Morning Train (Nine To five) and her only no. 1 hit in the US. The James Bond movie theme song For Your Eyes Only earned her a number of nominations including Best Female Vocal Performance Grammy awards in 1981 and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards in 1982.

Another hit single Telefone in 1983 was nominated for Best Female Pop/Rock Vocal Performance. In the same year, her duet with Kenny Rogers in the song We’ve Got Tonight made it to no. 1 on the country chart and Almost Over You also no. 1 in the AC chart hit.

She did another collaborative work with Prince in the single U Got the Look and The Arms of Orion for the movie Batman. She also did some Grammy award-winning Spanish songs like Me Gustas Tal Como Eres (I Love You Just The Way You Are), La Noche Y Tu (We Got Tonight) and Todo Me Recuerda a Ti (Everything Reminds Me of You).

Sheena’s acting career was given a break in 1987 when she appeared on the TV program Miami Vice as Caitlin Davies, but her busy schedule forced her to give up the role later, although she received good reviews for the episodes that featured her.

The succeeding years after 1987 was a rollercoaster ride for her career as singer. Her four marriages ended up to a divorce, the first in 1979 with Sandi Easton (she chose to retain his surname), the second in 1984 with talent agent Rob Light, third in 1997 with producer Tim Delam and the last in 2002 with plastic surgeon John Minoli. Her last marriage lasted for barely a year.

Sheena has two adoptive children: a boy named Jake in 1994, and a girl named Skylar in 1996. She happily claims that her children are her top priority right now, so her concerts are usually scheduled on weekends.
