He grew up in Upper Saint Andrew Parish, a few miles north of his birthplace of Kingston. His mother is a well-known painter in his country and a famous athlete. His grandfather was on the first Jamaican Men's National Water Polo Team. His father played water polo as well. Sean Paul himself tried to play in the water polo team, but quit to pursue a music career.
Sean Paul first became a deejay after writing his own songs and crafting rhythm tracks. His influences were Super Cat and Don Yute, the latter becoming his idol and mentor. Paul also associated himself with members of the reggaa-pop band Third World to establish himself as an artist, and even his brother Jason Jigzag" Henriques helped him in making connections in the music business. Sean Paul first released his debut single Baby Girl (Don't Cry) in 1996. The song was a hit, leading to other smash hits like Nah Get No Bly (One More Try), Deport Them, Excite Me, Infiltrate, and Hackle Me. It produced his debut album, Stage One.
The release of Paul's second album, Dutty Rock in 2002, was his biggest hit yet. Making it to hit charts and selling millions of copies. The record reached 2x Platinum within months. Asides from the instant success, Sean Paul also did collaborations with various artists such as Mr. Vegas, DMX, and Spanner. With a performance in the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City, Paul drew a sensational crowd and launched his own following of loyal fans from all over the world. The album gained critical acclaim and massive success with chart topper hits like, Gimme The Light and Get Busy. He began again collaborating with other artists. He was featured in Beyoncé's single Baby Boy and Blu Cantrell's Breathe, both chart hits in 2003, and helping to push his reputation further still in the U.S.
