About
"Sam Moore" was born in Miami. He sang with a gospel group that toured Florida before turning to soul music. His mother was a teacher, his father a deacon, and his grandfather a Baptist preacher. "Dave Preter" was also born in Miami. During the '50s, they performed in soul and R&B clubs before meeting each other in at the King of Hearts club in Miami in 1961. David was hosting an amateur-night contest where Dave was singing. The two singers seemed to click, and the Sam and Dave duo was born and soon became a popular local Miami act and signed with Roulette Records, releasing a handful of singles.
They signed a recording contract under Stax Records by Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler in 1965. They released their hit single, "You Don't' Know Like I Know," in 1966 which chartered at #7 in the US R&B Charts. Other hit singles includes, "You Got Me Hummin" in 1966, "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" in 1967 and "I Thank You" in 1968. However, the duo's career began to unravel in 1968, when Stax's distribution deal with Atlantic ended. They released their first single, "You Don't Know What You Mean To Me" in that same year.
Now on a new label, the sudden lack of chart success added stress to the increasingly volatile personal relationship between Sam and Dave. They released their single, "Brown Sugar" in 1969. In 1970, they released more hit singles, "Baby, Baby, Don't Stop Now", and "Don't Steal From Me". This singles failed to chart, and after five straight commercial duds, Sam and Dave split up in June 1970.
Sam released three solo hit singles in 1971. However, in August 1971, the duo was reunited. They released their single, "Don't Pull Your Love" in October 1971. The duo made their final Atlantic recordings in August of 1972, four songs that were never released by the label. Their contract with Atlantic expired shortly thereafter. Their album, Back At Cha was released in 1975. Their hit single, "We Can Work It Out" is released in that same year.
During the 80, the duo continues to release more hit singles. During the mid-'80s, Moore revealed the sources of the duo's tensions in a series of interviews. He disclosed that he had been addicted to drugs during the '70s. In 1987, Dave was arrested for selling crack to undercover police officers. After one year, Dave died in a car crash in Sycamore, Georgia, while driving to his mother's house. Sam continued to perform sporadically.
