Sam Cooke was a popular and influential American gospel, R&B, Soul, pop singer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Musicians and critics recognize his as one of the founders of soul music. For six electrifying years, he established a new standard for gospel expression. One of his songs he wrote is Be With Me Jesus.

Sam Cooke was born on January 22, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He had four brothers namely Willie, Charles Jr.,L.C., and David and three sisters namely Mary, Hattie and Agnes. Sam with his brothers Charles Jr., L.C. and sisters Mary and Hattie formed a gospel group called The Singing Children.

At the age of 15, Sam became a lead singer of the Teenage gospel group Highway QC's. He attended high school in Wendell Phillips High School and graduated with honors in 1948. When he was 19 years old he became the lead singer of Soul Stirrers, he replaced R.H. Harris as lead singer.

In the year 1951, Sam wrote and record the songs under Specialty Records gospel classics Nearer To Thee, Touch The Hem of His Garment and Be With Me Jesus. For six electrifying years, he established a new standard for gospel expression.

Sam died in December 11, 1964. The details of his death are still in dispute up to this date. The official records state the Sam was shot to death by Bertha Franklin, the manager of the Hacienda Motel where Sam had checked in earlier that evening of December 11, 1964.
