About
Born on February 18, 1980 in Moscow, Russia to a violinist father and a music professor mother, Regina Spektor stayed in her hometown until she's 9 before moving to Bronx, New York. As a child, Regina listened to his father's collection of Western rock and pop and learned how to play the piano at the age of six.
She attended Frisch Yeshiva High School (Yeshiva is a study of Torah and Talmud, an Orthodox Judaism) but transferred to Fair Lawn High School after two years because she feels out of place. Since they were unable to bring the piano from Moscow, Regina practiced her piano skills anywhere she can until she eventually got her own. She attended a four-year program of SUNY Purchase Music Conservatory which she finished within 3 years with honors. It further developed her piano and songwriting skills.
She was exposed to bluess and jazz which became her inspiration to record her self-released debut album, 11:11 released in 2001. The album is now mostly unavailable but can be downloaded from Regina Spektor's official website. Followed by another self-released album, 2002's Songs. This came to the attention of They Might Be Giant's drummer Alan Bezozi who introduced her to Gordon Raphael. Together (Bezozi and Raphael) they worked on Regina's third effort (major label debut album) Soviet Kitsch in 2004, featuring the singles Us and Carbon Monoxide.
Regina Spektor found success in her single Us that she followed her Soviet Kitsch album with a CD/DVD Mary Ann Meets The Gravediggers And Other Short Stories two years later. Begin To Hope arrived in the summer of 2006 which comprises of all original material.
