About
R.J. Helton or "Rolando Alberto de Jesus Rivas, Jr." in real life was born on May 17, 1981 in Pasadena, Texas. At the age of 3, his parents were surprised when they saw their son mimic any singer he heard in the radio. His first public performance was when he joined an amateur talent show at the age of five. Their family moved in Cumming, Georgia when he was in his teenage years. He studied in Tuscola High Schol and became a member of their school choir. His career path took a large leap forward when he was 16. R.J. captured the attention of the promoters of a musical tour of schools, sponsored by Reader's Digest magazine.
After graduating from high school, he was invited to audition for a young vocal act named, "Soul Focus" in which he became a member. In 2001, the group disbanded. He returned in Atlanta in the end of 2001. He joined the first season of the phenomenal hit reality show, "American Idol". R.J. was selected to be on the show and eventually earned a place among the season's Top 5 finalists.
After the proper contest, he signed a recording contract under B-Rite Music Records. His debut album, Real Life in March 2004. It chartered at #14 on the Billboard Christian Charts. In October 2006, he revealed in the Larry Flick's show that he was a gay.
