About

Rock band Pink Floyd originated in Cambridge, England In 1965. The original band members were Syd Barrett (vocals, rhythm guitar), Bob Klose (lead guitar), Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals), Roger Waters (bass, vocals) and Nick Mason (drums). They named their band Pink Floyd as a tribute to Pink Anderson and Floyd Council (two blue musician). In 1968, David Gilmour (guitarist) joined the band. The following year, Barret had a mental breakdown for a long use of hallucinogenic drugs. Barrett became unpredictable, concerts suffered. They had to stop taking Barrett to the tour. Waters and Gilmour replaced him as the new band's lead vocalists.

Barrett was the main songwriter of the band. He contributed a lot of songs in the 1967 album, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and 1968 album, Saucerful Of Secrets. Due to mental disability the 1969 album, Ummagumma, was an album of live recordings and experimental studio singles. In 1971, Meddle was issued. Until today, critics claim it to be their best work. In 1973, Dark Side Of The Moon was released. The album tackled about insanity. The single "Money" stayed in the chart for a decade and the album became one of the top selling albums in history. The peak of the Pink Floyd's career didn't stop there. The release of Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall became the highest point of the band's career.

In 1977, when the Animals album was released Pink Floyd received a lot of cirticism. They used animals as metophors to compare to society. In 1979, The Wall had it's share of big hits like the singles: "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II" and "Comfortably Numb". At this time, conflicts within the band started to rise due to Waters taking the role as the leader of the band. This caused Wright to quit. In 1983, The Final Cut was released. In 1987, Pink Floyd disbanded. The band members did their own solo projects. In July 11, 2006, Syd Barrett died at the age of 60.

Reviews

Pink Floyd is one of the most influential band in rock history. At present, their works stay original and fresh. Every single is awesome. You will never hear thesame material as the Pink Floyd. The word classic rock is the best description of the band. --Mimi 08:40, 28 March 2007 (PST)
