She began singing at the age of five, her primarily audience was her parents. At the age of 12, Patty frequently join her brother Roger's band. Roger introduced his sister to Country Music Legend Singers, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton in 1971.

Patty auditioned songs from her little folder of songs, that she had been writing. Soon, Patty found herself, over the next few years, hangin' with Porter and Dolly on weekends, ate dinner with them, traveled with them, and learned a great many lessons about music from them. In 1973, Patty attended the Grand Ole Opry Show. Country singers like, Bill Anderson, Connie Smith, The Wilburn Brothers and Jean Shepard was scheduled to appear. Jean, however was stranded in a flood and said that she could not make it. Danny King called up Roger. Therfore, Patty and Roger appeared for about fifteen minutes on stage.

Shortly thereafter, Patty became a member of "The Wilburn Brothers", replacing famous country singer, Loretta Lynn. After graduating from high school, Patty changed her screen name "Patty Lovelace" to Patty Loveless". It was in the mid 1980's that Patty, upon hearing that Nashville was looking for more traditional artists, decided to pursue her dream. With the help of her brother she recorded a 5-song demo tape and managed to attract the attention of a producer at MCA/Nashville, Tony Brown.
