Patti Smith is an American Musician singer and poet who rose to fame via her debut album, Horses which was an instant hit.

Patti Smith was born on December 30, 1946 in Chicago. When she was three years old, they transferred to Philadelphia, and then they transferred in Woodsbury, New Jersey when she was nine.

Patti studied in Glassboro State Teachers College. She dropped out from school due to an unplanned pregnancy. Patti gave up the baby for adoption. After giving birth, she took a job on a factory assembly live. In 1967, she moved to New York City. She worked in a bookstore. In 1969, Patti and her sister went to Paris, buskin on the streets as a performance artist. When she returned in New York City, she worked in an underground theatre. In 1971, she appeared in an autobiographical play Cowboy Mouth.

For two years, Patti has performed in theatre plays. Patti became a writer for several rock magazines. She also published two volumes of her poems. She also composed songs for literary-minded metal band, Blue Oyster Cult.

In 1973, Patti and Lenny Kaye, a guitarist that she met in a record store clerk who is also a rock critic has performed in some clubs. In 1974, they recruited 'Richard Sohl for piano, they performed regular gigs around New York. In 1974, Lenny, Patti and Richard released an independent single, Hey Joe.

In 1974, Patti with her band played a few performances on West Coast. When they returned in New York, they recruited Ivan Kral as guitarist. They the band, Television in performing at CBGB's, a dive bar in the Bowery.

In 1975, they added Jay Dee Daugherty as their drummer. Patti also signed a recording contract under Arista Records. In the latter part of the year, Patti released her debut album, Horses. The album debuted at number on the Billboard charts.

In 1976, her next album, Radio Ethiopia was released which credited her and her band Patti Smith Group. In 1977, while performing in Tampa, Florida, Patti twirled herself of the stage, she broke two vertebrate in her neck and was forced to take some time off from music scene to recuperate. In that same year, Patti wrote a book of poetry entitled Babel.

In 1978, Patti released another album, Easter, which featured the song Because The Night which Patti collaborated with Bruce Springsteen. The song reached number 13 on the Billboard charts. The single became the biggest pop hit of Patti. In 1988, she released another album, Dream of Life. After the release, Patti retired from the music industry to concentrate with her family.

In 1994, Patti came back to reformed her former band, Patti Smith Group with a new bassist Tony Shahanan. In 1996, they released an album, Gone Again. In 1997, they released another album, Peace and Noise. In 2000, she released her most aggressive-sounding album, Gung Hu that earned her a Grammy nomination. In 2003, she signed a recording contract under Columbia Records. In 2004, she released her first album, Trampin under Columbia. Last March 2007, Patti was inducted into Rock and Hall of Fame.
