[edit] About
Patti Austin was born on August 10, 1950 in Harlem, New York. Patti made her performing debut, singing a song called "Teach Me Tonight" on the stage of Harlem's famed Apollo Theater during an appearance by vocalist Dinah Washington, at the age of four. At the age of five, she already signed a recording contract under RCA Records. At the age of nine, she made a concert tour with her Godfather Quincy Jones. At the age of 16, she also toured with "Harry Belafonte". As an adolescent she appeared on "The Sammy Davis, Jr. Show". Patti began to receive numerous opportunities to compose and sing TV commercial jingles.
In 1976, Patti signed a recording contract under CTI Records. She released her debut album, End of A Rainbow in August 1976. Her second album, Havana Candy was released on October 1977. Her third album, Body Language was released on October 1980.
In the late of the year, 1980, Patti signed a recording contract under her Godfather's recording company, Qwest Record. She released her first album, Every Home Should Have One under Qwest Records in 1981. Finally, it brought Patti in stardom. It features her hit single, "Do You Love Me/The Genie" which chartered at #1 on the Dance Charts and a duet with, James Ingram entitled, "Baby Come to Me." In 1984, she released her self-titled album. Her next two albums under Qwest Records failed to reach the chart and her career took a dip.
She was also shaken by a house fire that destroyed nearly everything she owned and came within seconds of killing her elderly parents.
Her career went back after she released her new album, Love is Gonna Getcha in 1990 and features the hit single, "Through The Test of Time". In 1991, she recorded the duet "You Who Brought Me Love" with music legend Johnny Mathis which was received with critical acclaim. Her next album, In and Out of Love under Concord Jazz was released in 1998. In 2001, she released her album, On The Way To Love. A tribute to Ella Fitzgerald entitled, For Ella was released in 2002. Her latest album, Avant Gershwin was released in 2007 that also won her a Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Album in 2008.
