[edit] About
Parliament was originally founded by George Clinton in 1955 who gradually put together a collective of over 50 musicians. George Clinton was born on July 1941 at Kannapolis, North Carolina. When George's family went to New Jersey to settle their, he became interested in doo-wop, which is beginning to explode in the New York Area. That's why he came up with an idea to formed a new group called Parliament with an original line up, Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins, Grady Thomas, Raymond Davis, and Calvin Simon. The band had only released two singles during the next ten years.
In 1967, finally, they released a hit single, (I Wanna) Testify. When the band, had a trouble with Revilot Records who refused to record any material, George decided to record the same band under a new name, Funkadelic which was founded in 1968.
In 1970, George has regained the rights of the name Parliament. He then signed the entire Funkadelic line up to Invictus Records to Parliament. In that same year, they released an album, Osmium which reached number 30 at Billboard charts. In 1971, they released a single, The Breakdown. After the released of the single, the name Parliament was again abandoned for some time, as Funkadelic was much more successful.
In the early 70's, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins and Catfish Collins joined Funkadelic. The band had released five albums from 1970 until 1974 with only minor hits. In later part of that year, Funkadelic signed a recording contract under Casablanca Records as Parliament. They released a single Up For the Down Stroke, which reached number 10 on the Billboard charts. In the early part of 1978, this proves to be year of Parliament which their single, Flash Light became the first number one hit of the band. Their album, Funkentelechy reached number 13 at Billboard charts. In 1979, another single, Aqua Boogie from their album, Motor-Booty Affair went number one again at Billboard charts. In the later part of 1979, they released their ninth album, Gloryhallastoopid and reached number 10 at Billboard charts. In 1982, George started to be on solo with the released of his album, Computer Games. Throughout the years, Parliament became one of the most expected bands in the 70's. They are now recognized as one of the ancestors of funk music.
