About
Our Endless Numbered Days was released under the indie label Sub Pop on March 23, 2004. This album was recorded at Sam Beam's home in Miami, Florida, and in the Engine Studios in Chicago with Brian Deck in 2003. In contrast to his debut album The Creek Drank the Cradle, Sam Beam chose to have an outside producer in Brian Deck and a background vocalist in her sister Sarah Beam for this particular album. Adding flavor to his music by means of more instruments and more people resulted to a change in the sound that Sam Beam used to create prior to Our Endless Numbered Days. Drums were used, for example, in the track "Free Until They Cut Me Down," while pedal steel guitar was used for "Sunset and Soon Forgotten." The favorite "Naked As We Came" do not just boast of a beautiful melody but also showcases background harmony by Sarah. "Cinder and Smoke" had its share of benefits from the production touches as it was accompanied with Native American chants.
Sam Beam may have made a huge leap from studio-at-home to professional recording studios, and from a one-man-show to a collaboration, but the quality of his songs remain excellent. His songs are very well-written and his voice remain calm and soothing. The words and the melodies are still the focal point. Add to this the variety and technological enhancement from the changes made and one gets a really good album.
