We’re the truth! We’re like a good home cooked meal. It takes time to prepare and season. Better yet, we’re like a bottle of wine. The wine has to get a little old to get better. We’ve been signed for some years, but the older the better. So, now we’ve marinated and it’s time for everyone to take a sip,“ says 22 year old Jon Gordon. Gordon is one-fourth of the R&B group One Chance that includes his brother 23 year old Michael Gordon, 23 year old Courtney Vantrease and 21 year old Rob Brent.
Two years ago, the Chicago natives held down a top 30-spot on Billboard magazine’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with their single Look at Her featuring D-4L’s Fabo. The group calls the song Snap & B. “When we put that out snap music was winning. A lot of R&B no matter how hot it was wasn’t. We looked at it like we needed to do something to grab everyone’s attention so we can expand to our real selves,” says Jon.
This year the group is planning on introducing fans more to who they are with their debut album this summer. “It’s pretty much all recorded. Right now, we’re just focusing on dropping our next single You Can’t Resist It featuring Lil Wayne,” says Jon. But members say don’t expect for all of their music to sound like their first single. Look at Her is the only Snap & B song up there. Everything else is club oriented. We change with the times and we have songs that you can just sit back and chill to. Our album will reflect our versatility,” says Michael. “We are street kids, but we also do the harmonies. Like the Boys II Men mixed with Jodeci- with the Temps mixed with the New Edition. We’re all of that combined.”
And while the guys say they’ve studied the popular groups that came before them, it wasn’t until high school that they actually started crafting their sound. “Mike and I wanted to start a group so we started looking around in Chicago. There’s this one school that always has talent. It’s called Kenwood High School. That’s the school Rob went to. He was performing at a talent show. We saw him and approached him. He was down to be in the group. From there we all started to do a high school tour. Then we met Courtney at his school. From there, he got in the group,” says Jon.
From there, it was a road trip that hit I-85 that helped the guys get their big break. “We came down to Atlanta, and we were selling Cds in the mall. Basically we knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew Usher! Usher was having a talent showcase. He wanted to sign some artists. We performed and out of 16 acts he signed us,” says Jon. It’s been four years since the group inked a deal with Usher’s US Records, a vanity label of J Records. “The record business takes time. At the time when we got signed, Usher came out with his Confessions album and it blew up. In a sense, we were on the back burner. It was frustrating because we were like we’re signed to this guy and were not doing nothing. But at the same time, we were still staying focused and making sure we stayed good as far as our craft and physical appearance. We were marinating,” says Jon.
The group says J records soon came on board afterwards, and that’s when they started recording their album. “We’ve worked with a range of people: Tank, Ryan Leslie, Robin Thicke. We’ve been in the building with a lot of people,” says Jon. “T-Pain produced two of our songs. Hurricane Chris is on a feature. We worked with B. Cox. A lot of new producers that aren’t actually out there yet as far as, Soundz and Oak. Oak is getting real hot right now, he’s done a couple of records on Mario’s project ( Go!, 2007),” says Michael.
Once the group‘s album drops, One Chance is planning on hitting the road to promote it. “Yea! We’re going to do the whole nine- radio promo tour and god willing will be on tour with Usher,” says Jon. Usher is also in the studio working on his fifth studio album. Regret will be the singer’s first release since 2004’s Confessions. The album is expected to be released in March. “Right now, we respect the fact that he’s focused on his project. It’s cool. He still hears the music that we record, and gives his opinion,” says Jon. And while the group says they’re thankful to be associated with the Grammy-award winning singer, Michael says there’s one thing One Chance wants to achieve on its own. “We want people to love us for us. Not because we’re signed to Usher.”
