Singer/ songwriter Neneh Cherry (Neneh Marianne Karlsson) was born on March 10, 1964 in Stockholm, Sweden. At the age of 2 years old, she was brought along by her step-father (Don Cherry a jazz artist), in his tours. She studied at New York but dropped out at the age of 14. During the 80’s she joined a punk group named the Cherries in London. After releasing three albums together the band split. She began rapping at clubs where she was discovered by a talent scout and offered Cherry a contract.
Cherry’s debut single “Stop the War”. She became involved with composer, Cameron McVey, who also wrote for her debut album, Raw Like Sushi, which was released in 1989. The singles “Manchild” and “Kisses on the Wind” were a smash hit. After a hiatus, the young artist came back with 1992’s Homebrow. Two years later, Cherry did a single “Seven Seconds” with Youssou N’Dour. The album had disappointing sales but the next album, Man, which was released in 1996 was a hit.
