About
Before N'Sync was formed in 1995, their roots trace back much earlier to members, Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez. They were a part of the The Mickey Mouse Club along with fellow graduates, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. When the show ended, Justin Timberlake returned to orlando, Florida where he befriended, Chris Kirkpatrick. Then Justin Timberlake convinced JC Chasez to join the band he was forming with Chris Kirkpatrick. The three of them met Joey Fatone and Lance Bass months later. The band’s ready and all they need is a name. Justin’s mother, Lyn Harless, had an idea. She took the last letters of their first names and put them together: JustiN, ChriS, JoeY, LancetoN and JC. For a couple of years, Lance told fans that his name was short for Lanceton, to get the second “N”.
N'Sync hook up with a series of producers (including Denniz Pop) and recorded their self-titled debut album under Transcon. In spring of 1998, they released the album and became an overnight success especially throughout Europe. The singles off the album are Tearin’ Up My Heart and I Want You Back, where it became major hits. They also released Home For Christmas that same year which also did well in the United States and Europe.
As the fall of the 1999 hit, N'Sync fought a court battle against Lou Pearlman’s management company, Transcon, for citing illicit business practices on Pearlman’s part. N'SYNC struck back shortly thereafter, filing a countersuit against Pearlman citing fraud, breach of contract, and Pearlman's breach of fiduciary duty while he was the group's manager. A federal judge turns down their former manager's request for an injunction against N'Sync, allowing the group to release their thrid album, No Strings Attached early in 2000. N'Sync left Transcon and on to Jive Records, ironically home of rival boyband, Backstreet Boys and Justin Timberlake ex-girlfriend, Britney Spears.
In 2000, the highly anticipated third album No Strings Attached was released under new label. The album sold 2.4 million copies in its first week of release (where 1.1 million copies of it are attributed to its first day release). It broke the record by ranking the highest first week album sales in music history. Successful singles released off the album are: Bye, Bye, Bye, It’s Gonna Be Me and This I Promise You.
Their fourth album, Celebrity, released in 2001, came in number 2, selling 1.8 million copies on its first week. Hit singles off the album such as Gone, Pop and Girlfriend, has expanded their influence into R&B community.
The band has made a couple of guest appearances in TV series and movies. Plans for their fifth album has been discussed but the details remained uncertain. There are rumors that Justin Timberlake has quit the group. Through an interview on one of MTV’s show, Justin inadvertently admitted that he’s responsible for N'Sync’s extended break, which added to the uncertainty over the group’s future. He also mentioned that if they reunite now, there is no assurance if the music they are once famous for would still be accepted by the maturing audience since their genre has decreased popularity. Therefore, there are no plans yet for the near future. According to Jive Records, the group signed a contract guaranteeing a minimum of 5 albums (two of which has been released, No String Attached and Celebrity). Three more albums are on the way though there is no specific time as to when they will start to record. Even though the reunion isn’t in the cards as of now, the guys are still very good friends and they are busy with their solo careers. Two of its members, Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez continued their music career and released their solo albums – Justified in November 2002 and Schizophrenic in 2004, respectively. Justin has released his sophomore album, FutureSex/LoveSounds on September 2006 while JC Chasez is working on his follow-up album, due out early 2007.
Chris Kirkpatrick closed his clothing business, FuManSkeeto and busied himself with a couple of indie/punk rock bands and also started recording with his other band, Nigels 11. Lance Bass finished his training in Russia in 2002 and became a certified astronaut. But his goal in reaching the outer space has to wait due to lack of funding. Instead, he focused on his acting career by working on several projects in his film production company, Bacon and Eggs and starred his own movie. And after months of speculations about his sexuality, he finally announced the truth that he’s gay and is currently in a relationship with Reichen Lehmkuhl, the winner of the reality hit TV show, The Amazing Race. Joey Fatone has also been busy with his acting career. He’s a part of the family comedy movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Cooler, Homer Spumoni and Red Riding Hood, which is an experimental musical version. Looks like it would take a while before they’ll reunite again for their fifth album.
