Musicforthemorningafter was released on March 27, 2001 under Columbia Records. The album charted at #111 on the Billboard 200 albums chart on 2002 and eventually was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Three singles were released from the album led by the hit single "For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is)" which charted at #28, "Strange Condition" at #36 on the Billboard Modern Rock tracks. The other one being "Life of the Chain".
According the Pete Yorn, this is the first three of a series of albums that represent the day in a life where Musicforthemorningafter signifies "morning". The next two albums were Day I Forgot (daytime) and Nightcrawlere (night).
