Melvins is an American experimental sludge metal/grunge band formed in the early 80's and still existing up to now. They released several albums including the hit one, Houdini.

Melvins was formed in 1982 at Aberdeen, Washington by "Buzz Osborne" on guitar, "Matt Lukin" on bass and "Mike Dillard" on drums. The three attended in Montesano High School. Mike left the band because he cannot jive with their songs, he was replaced by, "Dale Crover". Dale is 15 years old at that time.


Their debut album, Gluey Porch Treatments was relesed in 1987 by Alchemy Records. In 1988, Buzz and Dale moved in San Francisco, California. Matt stayed in Aberdeen and formed a new band called, Mudhoney. Matt was replaced by, "Lori Black", daughter of Shirley Temple. Their second album, Ozma was issued in 1989 by Boner Records. They released their album, Bullhead in 1990.


In 1992, Lorax left the band. She was replaced by, "Joe Preston". In 1992, they released their next album, Lysol which was renamed to "Melvins" because Lysol was a trademarked name. Joe left the band to join , Thrones. Joe was replaced by a rejoined member, Lorax. They signed a new recording contract under Atlantic Records in 1993.


Their next album, Houdini was released in 1993 which chartered at #29 on The Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Lorax again left the band and was replaced by, "Mark Deutrom". Their next album, Stoner Witch was released in 1994. Their next album, Dissonant Prick was released under Amphetamine Reptile Records.


In 1996, they returned to Atlantic Records and relased their next album, Stag which landed at #33 on The Billboard Heatseekrs Chart. Atlantic Records dropped the band in 1997 after releasing three albums. They a signed a new recording contract under Amphetamine Reptile in 1997 and released their next album, Honky.


In 1999, they signed a recording contract under Ipecac Recordings. It produced several albums like, The Maggot and The Bootlicker among others. Their next albums, Electroretard was issued in 2001 and Hostile Ambient Takeover in 2002. In early 2006, they merged with another band called, Big Business and had a concert tour together. The merged band released their album, (A) Senile Animal in that same year. Their new album, Nude With Boots is slated to be issued on July 2008.

  • The band was named after a grocery clerk at a Thriftway in Montesano, Washington where Osborne also worked as a clerk.
