Melankton was released in the US on March 27, 2007. Of the three albums she was working on, Kate Havnevik chose to release Melankton first because she thought it provided the best introduction to her craft. The album was recorded in various places, including London, Bratislava, Oslo and L.A. The album title is from a character in a Norwegian book she read. Melankton translates to "black rose." Guy Sigsworth and Carmen Rizzo shared in the production of the album. It was first introduced online in Kate Havnevik's Official Site from March 11-12, 2006. By March 27, 2006, it became available on iTunes music store, and was then released in Norway on April 2006. By the end of the year, Melankton was released in the UK. The album has been out in North America one year after its iTunes release. Havnevik signed a licensing agreement with Universal Republic Records for the US distribution.

In the first track entitled "Unlike Me," she sings, "Unlike you/Unlike you/I am not pretending." She wrote this song together with Guy Sigsworth. This song, along with "Not Fair" were released as singles in 2006. Five of the 13 tracks were featured in several Grey's Anatomy episodes.
