About
What can be more Greek than bouzouki? And yet the name comes from bozuk, a kind of Turkish bağlama saz - just one look and you’ll see that the very Turkish saz and the very Greek bouzouki are cousins. So who better than Turkish-Greek Orhan Osman to take this dynamic instrument on from the traditions of Greek island villages and the wonderfully familiar music of Mikis Theodorakis and give it a new face, a new vitality, a new place in the music of the world?
Born in Germany, raised in Greece and now living in Turkey, Orhan Osman is first and foremost a musician, a composer, arranger and improviser – on this CD you’ll hear traditional songs such as the classic Chechen Girl, but you’ll also hear the influence of jazz fusion bands such as Weather Report; he’s a virtuoso of the instrument he loves, counted amongst the best and earning the name by which he is fondly known - Buzuki Orhan; he is a free-spirited traveller delighting in the music of the world - you’ll hear Greece and Turkey of course, but also the Balkans, India, Caribbean calypso, French gyspy jazz and touches of Celtic music. As he sings in [Göçebe Şarkısı] “I have no address, I’m happy”. Finally, he reflects in his music both the dynamism and gentleness in his personality - sparkling energetic bouzouki solos and tender reflective moods show him to be what he is, a true musician, an open-hearted citizen of the world.
