Maureen McGovern is an American Artist and Broadway Actress. Her career spans 35 years, including recordings, concerts, Broadway, films, television, radio and composing, all with a voice that defies categorization. Her notable albums include, The Music Never Ends.

About

Maureen McGovern or "Maureen Therese McGovern" in real life was born on July 27, 1949 at Youngstown, Ohio to "Mary Rita Welsh" and "James Terrence McGovern". At the age of three, Maureen already knows how to sing. At the age of eight, her dream is to become a professional singer. Her favorites are, Barbra Streisand and Dionne Warwick.


In 1967, after graduating from high school, Maureen worked as a secretary. She is also a part-time performer of a local folk band, "Sweet Rain". "Russ Regan", head of 20th Century Records was impressed when he heard a sample demo of Maureen. Immediately, Maureen signed a recording contract under the said recording company. Maureen made history in 1975 as the first singer to have recorded and introduced two Oscar nominated songs in the same year, "We May Never Love Like This Again" and "Wherever Love Takes Me" from the said recording company.


In 1976, her contract with 20th Century Records expired. Her biggest break came in 1978 when she recorded the version of "Can You Read My Mind", from the movie Superman. The song chartered #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In that same year, she released the single, "Different Worlds", the theme of a TV sitcom, "Angie". The song spends two weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.


In the early 80's, her career shifted to Broadway theatre. She made her debut appearance at Gilbert & Sullivan's musical "The Pirates of Penzance" as Madel in 1981. She also performed the character of Maria from "The Sound of Music" and "South Pacific" as Nellie Forbush. She continued her musical theatre until 1985.


Maureen returned in music industry, recording four albums, Another Woman in Love in 1987, State of The Heart in 1988, Naughty Baby in 1989 and Christmas with Maureen McGovern in 1990. These entire albums were released under CBS Records. Other notable albums of Maureen are, Baby I'm Yours in 1992, The Music Never Ends in 1997 and Pleasure of His Company in 1998 which are all under RCA Records.


The album, The Music Never Ends was re-released in 2003 under Fynsworth Alley Records with bonus tracks. She returned to Broadway Theatre in 2005. She originates the role of "Marmee" in Little Women. Maureen was named one of the Top 100 Irish-Americans by Irish America Magazine in April 2005. Recently she received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Youngstown State University.
