About
Hip Hop artist Mase, originally named as Mason Durell Betha was born on August 27, 1977 in Jacksonville, Florida. When he was only 5 years old his family transfered to Harlem, New York City. At the age of 13 he was going out with the wrong crowd so his parents sent him back to Florida but after two years Mase returned to Harlem and started rapping. He earned a basketball scholarship to SUNY. With the nickname Mase Murders he joined a rap group called Children Of The Corn. Mase went solo after one of the member died in a car accident. In 1996, he went to Atlanta hoping to have a deal with Jermaine Dupri, instead the impressed P. Diddy signed him in with Bad Boy.
Mase made his debut on P. Diddy's "Only You". After his debut he started appearing on other P. Diddy's singles such as "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" and "It's All About the Benjamins". He worked with a lot of well-known astists like Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems", Mariah Carey's "Honey", Brian McKnight's "You Should Be Mine", Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s "Young Casanova" and Busta Rhymes' "The Body Rock".
His name was already knownn in America before releasing his debut album, Harlem World in 1997. It featured P. Diddy, as an artist and his producer, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, DMX, Lil' Kim, Monifah, 112, The L.O.X., Eightball & MJG, Black Rob, and Lil' Cease. The album spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Album Charts. The singles "Feels So Good" entered the Top Five Pop Hit and "What You Want" topped at #3 on the Hot R&B Charts. Harlem World was a 4x Platinum album.
Mase's appearances on the other artist's singles kept on comming. He appeared on Brandy's "Top of the World", P. Daddy's "Lookin' at Me", Camron's "Horse and Carriage", 112's "Love Me" and Mya's "Take Me There". In April 1998, Mase was arrested for soliciting a prostitute but denied the accusation. His second album, Double Up, was another smash hit. Before it was released Mase announced his retirement from the music industry. He didn't want to promote the album and give live performances. The album reached only at #11 on the charts. The retired Mase worked with inner-city youth and gave inspirational speeches on the religious circuit. He also published a memoir called Revelations: There's a Light After the Lime. In 2004, he released his come-back album, Welcome Back.
