About
Mae is composed of Matt Beck on guitar, Jacob Marshall on drums, and Dave Elkins on vocals and guitar. The band's name, which is an acronym for Multi-sensory Aesthetic Experience, was the idea of their drummer Jacob. It came from aesthetic theory which he explored while a student at Old Dominion University. The band wants to present their music that can be translated into terms the other senses can comprehend, so thus the name Mae.
Mae was initially a recording project of Dave and Jacob. Their music adventure began in 2001, playing shows in and around Virginia and eventually sharing stages with Coheed and Cambria, Movielife, River City High, Brand New, The Exit, Something Corporate and a lot others.
The band defines their music as "melodic, energetic rock" in which the hard and the soft are consciously made to exist at the same time to give their audience a wider musical scope. Their sound has been distinguished to be relative to Switchfoot, Jimmy Eat World, The Get-Up Kids, Weezer, Holland and other similar bands. Although at present, there has been an inflating market of post-punk, power pop, semi-emo, melodic rock bands, Mae is still able to rise among the bunch.
The band's first album, Destination:Beautiful is the product of their first EP Embers and Envelopes plus seven more songs after earning a recording contract with Tooth and Nail. In 2005, they released their second album The Everglow which gained both critical and fan acclaim. The album was re-released in 2005 with three new songs and a 2-hour DVD showing behind-the-scenes, videos, and live footage of the band.

Reviews
Mae intentionally creating their music to be both hard and soft does work to appeal to broader audiences. Their warm, fuzzy rhythms and modern rock combination serve as ear candies, plus a couple of post-new waves echoing their band influences like The Cure and The Police also adds up to their appeal.
Lyrically, their initial project Embers and Envelopes is still the best. The song speaks, "We write to patch things up, maybe not to agree but to proclaim love/Let's look ahead and then we'll see The One whose glory never ends." -jamie
