About
Lisa Anne Loeb was born on March 11, 1968 in Bethesda, Maryland and raised in Dallas, Texas, where she attended an all-girl private school - The Hockaday School. She continued her education at Brown University where she earned her degree in comparative literature in 1990. During her college days, she formed a band along with her roommate Elizabeth Mitchell and fellow brown classmate, Duncan Sheik as guitarist. They named themselves Liz and Lisa. Lisa Loeb penned most of the songs while Liz often takes the lead vocals. They released their album Liz and Lisa followed by their second album Days Were Different under an independent label in 1989 and 1990, respectively. After college, she move to New York and attended for one semester at Boston's Berklee School of Music. She then formed a band, Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories with Liz singing back-up vocals.
In 1993, her friend and actor Ethan Hawke recommended her to Reality Bites director and star Ben Stiller. He included the song Stay (I Missed You) on the hit classic film's soundtrack. The single hit the number 1 spot where she became the first and, so far, the only artist to reach the top spot before being signed to any recording contract. She also earned her Grammy and Brit awards nominations and eventually landed a record deal with Geffen Records. The single can be found on the band's debut album Tails (1995). It was released over a year after signing a contract. The album was co-produced by her longtime then-boyfriend Juan PaƱito. Tails went certified gold followed by another certified gold and Grammy nominated album Firecracker. Bandmate Elizabeth Mitchell formed a band of her own with Dan Littleton called Ida. Though Firecracker was critically praised, it didn't come close to the commercial success of their first album.
Five years later, Lisa Loeb returned with Cake And Pie under a new label. She collaborated with Peter Collins, Glen Ballard, and boyfriend Dweezil Zappa to name a few. Cake And Pie was a commercial failure that Lisa Loeb eventually dropped out of the label and off the supporting band Nine Stories and signed a deal with Artemis. She bought the rights of the album and re-released it under the new label and new title Hello Lisa which featured the Sanrio character - Hello Kitty on the album cover.
Reuniting with her college roommate and bandmate, Elizabeth Mitchell they recorded and released a children CD with a book entitled Catch The Moon in 2004. That same year, Lisa Loeb and Dweezil Zappa had ended their longtime relationship. Lisa announced that it was time for them to go their separate ways. Also, that year, she again changed her record label due to lack of promotion and signed to an independent label -- Zoe/Rounder where she released her fifth album The Way It Really Is. It was sculpted from her own experiences in her musical journey and recent events in her life. Early 2006, she released another album The Very Best of Lisa Loeb, which includes some selection of songs in her 5 albums.
Aside from singing and writing music, she has also done several guest appearances and voice overs for TV shows and movies including, The Nanny (1997), Cupid (1999), House on Haunted Hill (1999), voice over for Mary Jane Watson on MTV's animated show, Spider-Man (2003), her own series in the Food Network with her former boyfriend Dweezil Zappa (2004), and #1 Single (2006) aired at E! Entertainment Television. The reality TV #1 Single is about looking for love in the 21st century.
She's working on her new album which only proves that Lisa Loeb is here to stay.
