Laura Branigan is a Popular Pop Singer, who rose to fame via her famous international hit single, "Self Control".

About

Laura Branigan was born on July 3, 1957 in Brewster, New York. Laura performed a lead role in a school musical in her senior year in high school. After graduating from High school in 1975, she went to Manhattan to study in The Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was a working student. Laura worked as a waitress to pay her rent and tuition.


She had a short affiliation with an early 70's band, Meadow, in which she co-wrote and sang on their 1973 album "The Friend Ship". After becoming the backup singer for Canadian Folk Artist, Leonard Cohen, Laura decided to concentrate on her solo career. She was managed by, "Sid Bernstein" who had managed famous artist like, The Rascals and Bay City Rollers.


Laura auditioned for Ahmet Ertegun, the chairman of Atlantic Records in 1979. He was impressed with her voice and immediately signed her a recording contract. Her debut album, Branigan was released in 1982 which features the hit singles, "Looking Out For Number One" which hit the U.S. Dance Charts and "Gloria" which has becone the signature song of her career and rising to the top of the Billboard charts and staying on the charts for an amazing thirty-six weeks.


Her second album, Branigan 2 was released in 1983. It features the hit singles, "Solitaire", "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You", which reached the Top Ten on the ARV Weekly Top 40 Chart and spent three weeks at Number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Charts.


Her next album, Self Control was released in 1984 and became an instant hit worldwide. It features the single, "Self Control" which became her biggest international hit reaching number one charts in several countries. Other single, "The Lucky One" went top 40. She also won the coveted Grand Prize at the 13th Tokyo Music Festival for her riveting performance of "The Lucky One."


In 1987, she released her next album, Touch. It features the singles, "The Power of Love", "Cry Wolf" and "Name Game". Her self-titled album was released in 1990 which features another Top 30 Adult Contemporary Hit single, "Never in A Million Years". Other singles which were included in this album are, "Turn The Beat Around", "Unison" and "The Best Was Yet To Come".


Laura's hit singles also became hit for other famous singers like "I Found Someone" which was sang by, Cher, "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?" for Michael Bolton and "The Power of Love" for Celine Dion. Laura came back in 2002 in a Broadway Musical entitled "Janis". In August 26, 2004, Laura died because of a brain aneurysm.

  • The 1983 film Flashdance contained two Laura Branigan songs, "Gloria" and a new song, "Imagination". The latter song was included on the Grammy Award winning Flashdance soundtrack that hit #1 and sold over six million copies in the U.S. alone.
