About
Born Louise Amanda Harman in Wembley, London, this 20-year-old has become one of the very few white British grime MC. She was primarily raised on the Chalkhill Estate, a council estate in North-West London. After dropping out from school at the age of 15, she took part in the UK's
British grime scene. She cites Ms. Dynamite as one of her influences that inspired her to pursue her music career. Others include Missy Elliott, So Solid Crew, and Oxide & Neutrino.
Lady Sovereign's music is undeniably of U.K. in terms of delivery and style. her heavy beats and charisma brought her the worldwide buzz. Inspired by her mother's Salt N' Peppa albums, she began writing her own raps at 14 and uploaded her Chalkhill stories into the So Solid Crew internet forum. There she met her longtime DJ, Frampster. Two years later she landed a gig in an educational film about the life of an up-and-coming MC.
She convinced producers that she could make a song for the soundtrack of the movie. The demos landed in the hands of Medasyn, the producer responsible for launching the careers of artists such as Frost P., Zuz Rock, and Shystie. Lady Sovereign was included in the album The Battle released in 2003 under Casual Records. The album featured freestyle girls versus boys battle rap. This would push Lady Sovereign into the spotlight. By 2005, Lady Sovereign signed on to Island Def Jam Music Group after an audition for Def Jam recordings president and CEO, Jay-Z and Island Def Jam Group chairman, Antonio "L.A." Reid.
Shortly afterwards, Random was released. Her second single, 9 to 5 hit the UK Top 40 at #33. Hoodie, produced by legendary dance act, Basement Jaxx hit only #44, failing to surpass the first release. Lady Sovereign wasm't about to give up, she since then recorded with the Beastie Boys and producer, Dr. Luke.
Lady Sovereign hit it big after The Ordinary Boys remixed her singel 9 to 5 into NinetoFive and credited it into their album, The Ordinary Boys vs Lady Sovereign. The single hit the UK Top 40 singles at #6 in CDs and vinyl. She was the first non -American female to be signed under Def Jam Records, after a former lack of success in the UK due in part to her representation of chav culture. A documentray on chavs produced by Julie Burchill served as a target of ridicule on the internet forum for ChavScu,. However, Lady Sovereign pushed on, co-headlining a tour with The Streets and appeared on the remix of their song, Fit But You Know IT. Lady Sovereign also contributed her rapping skills in ]Jentina's single, Sad Ass Strippa. Boosting again her career and making it to mainstream success.
In October 31st 2006, Lady Sovereign finally released her debut album, Public Warning featuring her past recordings and her new single, Love Me Or Hate Me, which reach #1 status on MTV's Total Reuest Live. The single also became part of the soundtrack for the game, Need For Speed: Carbon.
